Sisters (сестры) 2001
When you're eight the whole world is against you,
when you're thirteen - you are against the whole world

Alik is released from a term in prison and is met by his family - and his former colleagues, who want to know what he did with the money. Eight year old Dina is spoilt by the life of luxury the money has bought her parents, while her older half-sister Sveta lives a frugal life with her grandmother. There is, inevitably, little love between them. When an attempt at kidnap leads the two to run away together, they begin to find that the only people they can trust are each other.

Related to some extent by its themes with the 'Brother' films, and directed by the star of those films, Sergei Bodrov Junior (who has an extended cameo role here), 'Sisters' is an exploration of the sibling rivalry of a broken family. Set once again in the world of crime, but this time the tone has none of the black humour of the predecessors. In fact, it has more in common with 'I Wanted to See Angels', which is hardly a surprise as Sergei Bodrov Senior was co-writer on both films.

The film is given an enormous boost by the stunning performances of its two leads, particularly Oksana Akinshina as Sveta, who is fast making a name for herself with stunning performances in such films as 'Lilja 4-ever'. Bodrov, who was killed in 2002, showed promise here as a director.

The 'Bodrov' musical connections continue in this film with a soundract made up from music by Kino and Agata Kristi.
